 Sentinel of the Black Hills Pen & ink, watercolor ©2005 by Daniel P. Black Deeply impressed by the lonely grandeur of Devils Tower, I wanted to convey some sense of its scale in the landscape. I clambered through a cyclone fence, hiked across a hillside or two, and scrambled up some boulders until I caught this view—the tower looming over the pine forest at its base, the red bluffs, and the river winding through the meadow below. Finally, I knew it was time to start painting. |

As soon as I set up to paint at this lovely spot—the one fishing hole where no license is required—it started to rain on me. Talk about watercolors! I waited out the storm. This view captures two experienced predators, one wading and the other flying, who emerged after the rain in search of a free meal. |

Black My indefatigable guide, Mr. Milano, took me on wonderful tour of Custer State Park and I got a chance to see the largest herd of wild buffalo in America, as well as the prairie dogs, wild burros, antelope, and mountain goats for which the region is famous. I was particularly impressed by this male buffalo, standing like a rugged patriarch guarding his family. |

Well over 100 years old, it has long since been converted into a cozy little house, but it still stands as a reminder of a bygone era. I came by repeatedly, looking for the moment when the light was right. This late summer afternoon, when the eaves cast long shadows and the clouds were taking on a rosy glow, seemed just right to me. |
